Dave Matthews was born on June 12, 1969, in Charlottesville, Virginia. After graduating from the University of Virginia, Matthews moved to the small town of Richmond, Virginia, where he attended Virginia Commonwealth University for two years. The song "Crash" debuted on Billboard's Hot 100 at #72 and quickly climbed the charts until it peaked at #2. In October of that same year, it went on to be certified double platinum by the RIAA earning a total of 2.3 million units sold in the United States alone.
In 1992, Dave released his second album "Away from the World", which featured a cover of Neil Young's "Crazy On You". In 1993, Dave released his third album "Under the Table and Dreaming", which featured a cover of Ben Harper's "Stand Up".
In 1994, Dave released his fourth album "Before These Crowded Streets", which featured a cover of Blind Faith's "Can't Find My Way Home". In 1995, Dave co-founded the Dave Matthews Band (DMB) with longtime friend and fellow musician Leroi Moore. The band gained popularity after its self-titled debut record was released in 1994; it sold over five million copies and spawned two hit singles: "Crash Into Me" and "One Sweet World".
The band's popularity continued into the new millennium as its follow-up albums were also huge successes: "" (1996), "" (1998), "" (2000), "" (2002), "" (2004), and "" (2007). DMB has also been nominated for several Grammy Awards and has won four: Best Rock Album ("Under the Table and Dreaming"), Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocals ("One Sweet World"), Best Rock Song ("One Sweet World"), and Best Rock Album ("Live at Red Rocks").
